Students are encouraged to take ownership of their studies by exploring ideas beyond the classroom and engaging with a broad range of learning tools that enrich their understanding. Alongside subject-specific study guidance, students are supported to discover high-quality digital resources such as MOOCs, UpLearn, online lectures, journals and academic platforms that deepen curiosity and stretch thinking further.
Students are taught how to use their study periods intelligently, not simply to complete tasks, but to consolidate knowledge, practise key skills and prepare thoughtfully for forthcoming lessons. Dedicated quiet spaces, studio spaces, supervised study areas and the library provide the ideal environment for focused, purposeful work, helping students cultivate the habits of discipline and independence that top universities and employers look for. A good rule of thumb is that students should aim to match every taught hour with an equivalent amount of independent study.
By learning to balance structured classwork with self-directed study and wider exploration, students grow into confident, resourceful and academically resilient young adults, fully prepared to excel in the next stage of their journey.
Examples of recommended Independent study activities for each subject are listed below. Teachers will also share additional guidance and resources in lessons and through our Microsoft Teams platform.
